Fraunhofer Spain Research Attends the Spanish-German Forum on Digital Sovereignty and Artificial Intelligence
The German Chamber of Commerce held a new edition of the German-Spanish Digital Industry Day, organized in collaboration with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Spain. The event brought together institutional representatives, experts, and technology companies to discuss the challenges and opportunities of Europe’s digital transformation.
Fraunhofer Spain Research participated in the event through its director, Prof. Dr. Josep Samitier, in a context marked by discussions on artificial intelligence, digital sovereignty, and European industrial competitiveness. This event forms part of the 2026 initiative Germany and Spain: Towards a More Competitive and Resilient Business Ecosystem. The institutional opening was led by the Managing Director of the German Chamber, Mischa Groh, and the German Ambassador to Spain, Maria Margarete Gosse, who highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation between Germany and Spain to advance the digitalization of European industry and public services.
During the meeting, institutional leaders and business representatives analyzed the impact of artificial intelligence in areas such as public administration, industry, and technological innovation. Participants included Alberto Gago, Director of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence, and Thomas Jarzombek, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Digitalization and State Modernization, who addressed the need to foster a competitive European digital ecosystem based on shared values.
The various panel discussions focused on issues such as the modernization of digital administration, European technological sovereignty, the industrialization of artificial intelligence, and the regulatory challenges associated with its development. The im portance of strengthening collaboration among research institutions, industry, and public bodies to accelerate the adoption of strategic technologies in Europe was also emphasized.
Fraunhofer Spain’s participation in this forum, as well as in the subsequent discussions among attendees, reflects its commitment to applied innovation, technology transfer, and European collaboration in strategic areas related to artificial intelligence and digital transformation. In this regard, Josep Samitier, Director of Fraunhofer Spain Research, highlighted not only the valuable exchange of ideas and experiences between public and private sector entities from both countries across different AI application environments, but also Ambassador Maria Margarete Gosse’s interest in learning more about the activities being developed by the Fraunhofer Spain Research foundation.
