Fraunhofer CAT expands imaging capabilities with the acquisition of a new advanced microscope
The Fraunhofer Center for Applied Theragnostics (Fraunhofer CAT) has incorporated a new DMi8 Spinning Disk Confocal Scanner, expanding its capacity to study tissue models and organ-on-a-chip devices with better precision.
Microscopy is a fundamental tool in the scientific world. Many traditional microscopy techniques allow researchers to observe samples and structures mainly in two dimensions. However, and considering that biological systems are three-dimensional, the incorporation of a microscope such as the DMi8 with the Spinning Disk Confocal Scanner, represents a significant improvement over conventional microscopy since it allows not only, fast and efficient imaging of live samples, but also the capture of heights within the sample, enabling the study of three-dimensionality structures.
This new equipment uses a powerful light technology that penetrates and analyses the entire dimension of the samples, allowing its optical sectioning. In other words, the microscope captures images at different depths within the sample, which can be visualised in real time on the computer. This capability provides high-quality images rich in information and allows Fraunhofer CAT researchers to study the internal structure of complex samples more precisely. Indeed, with this 3D images, Fraunhofer CAT researchers can investigate for instance, how tissue structures (skin, intestine, blood-brain barrier, etc.) can be affected by different factors, including diseases like tumors, drugs or environmental conditions such as nutrition.
According to Fraunhofer CAT laboratory technician Aitor Otero, the new microscope represents a significant technological upgrade for the Center: »In terms of microscopy, this is among the most advanced technology currently available«. With this acquisition, Fraunhofer CAT continues to strengthen its research infrastructure and its capacity to develop innovative experimental models for biomedical research and applied theragnostics.
