Fraunhofer Center of Applied Theragnostics (Fraunhofer CAT)

The Fraunhofer CAT, legally dependent on Fraunhofer Spain Research, is dedicated to applied research and knowledge transfer in the field of precision medicine. Its work focuses on the design, modeling, and optimization of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic processes.

Embedded in a dynamic innovation ecosystem, the center invests in advanced interconnected diagnostic technologies and novel therapies. Its mission is to deliver products and services that:

·       Strengthen the competitiveness of the Biotech and MedTech sectors.

·       Enhance the sustainability of universal public healthcare systems.

·       Promote the development and adoption of personalized therapies.

To achieve this, Fraunhofer CAT advances technologies across different Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), progressing from TRL 2–3 (basic research in the laboratory) to TRL 5–6 (proof of concept and prototype development), bringing them closer to the market. This positioning enables R&D activities that go beyond the scientific excellence of research centers, without overlapping with the role of technology centers, which work up to TRL 8.

At the Catalan level, Fraunhofer CAT seeks close collaboration with the R+D+I ecosystem, including research centers, technology centers, companies, and hospitals, to ensure patients benefit directly from theragnostic approaches.

Fraunhofer Spain Research operates under the Fraunhofer funding model, which balances subsidized funding with the attraction of competitive private and public funds, ensuring performance indicators aligned with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft standards.

This unique approach allows Fraunhofer Spain Research to occupy a distinct place in Catalonia’s chain of valorization and transfer of applied research, filling a gap not currently covered by any single actor, while also connecting the Spanish innovation ecosystem with Europe’s most important applied innovation network.
