Fraunhofer CAT welcomes PhD researcher for experimental work on brain cell models

Last June, Fraunhofer CAT hosted Isabell Karnatz, a PhD researcher from Saarland University carrying out her doctoral work at the facilities of the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT.

Her research stay at Fraunhofer CAT reflects the value of scientific exchange within the Fraunhofer network and contributes to Fraunhofer Spain’s objective of establishing collaborative research programmes with Fraunhofer Institutes.

During the exchange, Karnatz carried out experiments for her PhD project, which focuses on the analysis and investigation of a cell-derived matrix for the cultivation of brain cells. This work aims to support the establishment of cell models that more closely mimic the physiology of the brain, creating experimental conditions that can be used for compound testing in vitro before further assessment of their potential suitability for patients.

At Fraunhofer CAT, she used spinning disc confocal microscopy to observe where cells attach to the substrate and whether they express specific proteins related to migration and cell growth. This imaging capability provided detailed insight into cellular behaviour, supporting the evaluation of the matrix as a relevant environment for brain cell cultivation.
